I'm still reading Children of Dune. Thats actually the one I stopped on when I first was reading the Dune series, so its entirely new for me. I did read God Emperor of Dune years later, but I don't remember it well, so I am looking forward to checking it out again.
These are some of the best books I've ever read. They're ultra wierd, and I am personally convinced that they only marginally qualify as science fiction, but whatever they really are, they're fantastic.
The Dune books require a ridiculous amount of attention and focus, and I think thats part of what I like about them. They're dense and full of insanely abstract concepts. To me, they're more about the evolution of conciousness and the dynamics of politics than anything else. The latter typically doesn't appeal to me, but the insanely convoluted intrigue of these books is enough to make even that subject interesting.

Well, I finished Children of Dune, and even though I said I wouldn't, I went ahead and started God Emperor. : P

Well, its official. I finished reading book six of the Dune series, Chapterhouse: Dune, last night.
I had read reviews that said that it ended with a "cliff hanger." But it ended with the same kind of open ending that all of Herbert's Dune books did. There could technically never be an "end" to Dune anyway as long as there were humans left to evolve and press on.
I found it to be satisfying, though in some ways I think that both Heretics and Chapterhouse were more like mood pieces. To me, the meat of the philosophical story ended with God Emperor. I enjoyed the last two books, but they felt like after -thoughts to me.
I feel like I should get a medal or something for making it through this whole series without a pause.

I've totally gone back to New Orleans land. I'm going to have to build myself up again get to back into the series after "Dune Messiah". You should get a medal though. It's insane that you read all of those back to back.
